Our History
Art Clancy, who grew up on a dairy farm in East Delta and graduated with a degree in agriculture from UBC, founded Okanagan Fertilizer in 1976. After working in the fertilizer industry for a number of years, Art realized that the BC Interior’s growing agriculture sector would benefit from a full-service fertilizer distributor. With support from Cominco Fertilizers (later Nutrien), the original bulk blending and warehousing facility was constructed in the town of Enderby.
Art’s hard work, agronomic expertise, and relentless focus on improving yields soon made Okanagan Fertilizer one of BC’s largest fertilizer distributors. Early innovations included soil nutrient analysis, prescription fertilizer blends and GPS guided custom application services. These were later followed with silage corn hybrids and alfalfa varieties that offered superior forage quality and higher yields.
The trend continued in recent years, with the introduction of controlled release nitrogen and advanced foliar fertilizer technologies. In 2011, expansion took us to new geographic markets, with the acquisition of 153 Mile Fertilizer. Located in Williams Lake, the heart of BC’s cattle country, 153 Mile Fertilizer was known for its close ties to the ranching community and business integrity. We welcome the opportunity to build on these traditions. Okanagan Fertilizer is now in its second generation of Clancy family ownership, with Art’s son Ken having taken over the business in 2008. Ken virtually grew up in the business and spent most summers while enrolled at UBC working in the fertilizer plant, meeting customers and learning the business from the ground up.
